Nursery Business based on seedlings of seasonal crop species PDF Print E-mail

Seedlings of seasonal crop species would always be in demand and the market is right at the doorstep of a rural nursery. Seedlings occupy very little space and water, while growing in a nursery. One can raise the seedlings of the next crop in a nursery while the previous crop is still standing in the field. This allows the farmer to grow more crops in a year, to overcome adverse weather conditions, and also to advance the date of planting in order to get an early crop.

Methods have been standardised for sugarcane, cotton and pigeonpea. By growing seedlings of sugarcane, cotton or pigeonpea in plastic bags during April and May, one can avoid the crop from from getting drought stressed during the hottest months of the year. The business based on sugarcane seedlings grown in plastic bags has an annual market potential of Rs. 5000 million in Maharashtra and that of cotton and pigeonpea is Rs. 8000 million each. The method can also be used in the case of many other crop species.
